Six - sigma as philosophy or/and tool for improving process

Hallo

Most of the concern in production plant is focused on the improvement current activity.
The main focus on the one hand is on the cost reduction, improving efficiency, delivery time... and on the other hand maintain the quality on the same or higher level, improve customer satisfaction … In other words, the question is about where is the optimum point and common sense. In my opinion, one of the significant problems is which tools (or way of thinking) ought to be used for evaluation and measure the complex process. I would like to recommend six sigma as one of the method which allows companies measure, implement and maintain effectively their process. I add the link - www.isixsigma.com.
Where could you find the information concerning the philosophy and tools offered by six - sigma. Additionally, I want to underline that all programs such as six - sigma may be implemented successfully only if are imposing and sustain by top management and are always on the high level of priority in company policy.

How do you find six-sigma as the philosophy or/and as improvement tools?

automation of production process versus calculation method

Hallo

The title “automation of production process versus calculation method” it is connecting with my periodical problems of budgeting the investment project in expansion of production technology and infrastructure. That problem lays on the calculation method which assume for the most investment project very short payback no longer then 3 or 5 years. Generally. If we consider expansion or investment in new technology in order to reduce bottlenecks. It is calculated the implementation and maintenance cost versus cost savings or compare witch alternative solution. The problem is that the labour cost in Poland it is really low compare with western Europe and is almost impossible to achieve in that short period of time acceptable payback. In fact that payback is crucial factor and it is difficult to persuade the head office to invest. I think that the lack of investment in new technology can have negative impact in on the competitiveness of Polish manufactures in the long term because in many cases new technology allow achieving much better efficiency and compensate the initial cost.

Do you have any comments or can you share with any practical approach?

The continuous improvement in a long term

Hallo

I have experienced several times that most of the continuous improvement programs such as six sigma, lean manufacturing or 5S; it does not work properly in a long term. In my opinion, these programs can give a good result after implantation because generally at the beginning, the major changes are possible and available and everyone can see it without deeper analyze. In contrast to long term where the changes are also carried out but are not so easy to see and analyze. Thus managers have a tendency to reject it or are overwhelmed by daily job.
What are your comments or opinion on those matters?
